| | The sizes are distinctly different and so each mouthpiece has a definite 'feel' on the face. The individual qualities of the Nos.1,2 & 3 mouthpieces are outlined below. The No.1 mouthpiece is around the same rim size as a Bach 1. The rim is very comfortable and the cup ‘roomy’. It has a slightly darker sound whilst maintaining the same color and distinctive sound quality of all Graham Ashton series. The backbore is a little different from the No.2 and No.3, to balance the larger cup and make the mouthpiece more efficient. This mouthpiece has an incredibly 'fat' sound in the low register and is ideal for the strong orchestral player. Great for both Bb and C trumpets. An excellent all-round mouthpiece. The No.2 rim size is between that of a Bach 1C and 11/4 C. It has a pure and even sound throughout all registers with bags of color. It will bring your Bb/C trumpet to life in the high register, and free up any stuffiness in the low register - especially on the C. Try the ‘Zarathustra’ octave leaps on C or Bb trumpet - you will be amazed by the response and intonation. This is the mouthpiece Graham Ashton uses on Bb and C. You can hear how versatile it is in the Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble recording of Daniel Schnyder’s ‘Trio’, recorded by Graham Ashton (trumpet), Jeff Lang (horn) and Jim Pugh (trombone) for the Signum Classics label. For the most part, the No.3 is a smaller version of the No.2 except for one small adjustment in the cup. It is an excellent all-round mouthpiece for those players who prefer a smaller rim. The size is similar to a Bach 1 1/2C or 3C - in fact, the Graham Ashton No.3 rim sits between these two sizes. It is a very easy mouthpiece to play and, like the No.1 and No.2, it has a very comfortable rim and produces a very even sound. Some players use the No.3 on the Eb and/or D trumpet as it has a ‘sparkly’ high register. A number of jazz and commercial trumpet players in the US are using the No.3. It is a favorite of Latin Jazz trumpet soloist, Ray Vega. ![]() |
