| | ![]() In General: Shanks are specific to a particular cup. Shanks give you the ability to change bore, backbore(only SF models for now), and the seating depth in the horn receiver to optimize response. Shanks are currently available in Stainless Steel only. About Houser Shank External Tapers: Shanks may be ordered with four unique tapers - #’s 0-3. Taper #0 is the smallest diameter shank (.293 in./ 7.442mm at tip). Taper #1 has a larger diameter and backs the shank out 1mm further than the #0. Taper #2 backs the shank out 2mm further then #0 and so on up to taper #3. As a point of general reference to other mouthpieces – #0 corresponds to many Schilke mouthpieces #1 corresponds to some Laskey and PHC universal shanks #2 corresponds to Houser, Lawson(older), and Alexander shanks, #3 has no counterpart that we have found. How to SELECT Shanks: We advise to first go with the recommended bore size/sizes for a given cup and experimenting with three shanks each with a different seating depth. For most players a shank grouping with numbers 1,2, and 3 will let you select the shank that delivers the best balance of resistance and slotting (stability) for a particular cup design and your horn. Once you have a shank with the seating depth, you can try that same model with different bores (drill sizes) and with the San Francisco model, different back bores as well. Fr.
